Sculptra vs Radiesse: Which Collagen Stimulator Is Right for You?
Collagen stimulators, also called biostimulators, have become one of the most talked-about anti-ageing injectables. Instead of simply filling a line, they encourage your skin to produce more of its own collagen, for results that look natural and last longer than many standard fillers.
The two best-known names are Sculptra and Radiesse. Both are well established, but they work in different ways, and the difference matters for how quickly you see results, how many sessions you need and what aftercare involves.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material that the body gradually breaks down. Once injected, it triggers a gentle response that builds new collagen over the following months.
Results: very little visible change at first; volume builds gradually over several months
Sessions: usually a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart
Longevity: results can last up to around two years
Aftercare: patients are usually asked to massage the treated area regularly for several days, to help the product spread evenly
Main watch-out: small lumps under the skin can form if the product is not prepared, placed and massaged correctly, so technique matters a great deal
What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is made from calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a smooth gel. It works in two stages: the gel provides immediate lift and structure, and as the gel is absorbed, the microspheres act as a scaffold that stimulates your own collagen.
Results: visible improvement straight away, which keeps improving as collagen builds
Sessions: often fewer sessions are needed to reach your goal
Longevity: results can last up to around 18 months
Aftercare: simple, with no prolonged massage routine
Extra use: in a diluted form, Radiesse can also be used to improve skin firmness in areas such as the neck, and to rejuvenate the backs of the hands
Sculptra vs Radiesse at a glance
Speed of results: Sculptra is gradual; Radiesse is immediate and then keeps improving
Number of sessions: Sculptra usually needs a series; Radiesse often needs fewer
Aftercare: Sculptra involves a massage routine; Radiesse does not
Structure and contour: Radiesse is better suited to defining the jawline, chin and cheekbones
Overall volume over time: Sculptra suits gradual, all-over volume restoration
Longevity: both are long-lasting, with Sculptra often slightly longer
Who might suit Sculptra?
Sculptra can suit patients with widespread, gradual volume loss who are patient, happy to commit to several sessions, and prefer a very slow change that friends and colleagues are unlikely to notice as a sudden difference.
Who might suit Radiesse?
Radiesse tends to suit patients who want to see a difference after their first session, would like better definition along the cheekbones and jawline, prefer simpler aftercare, or are also interested in improving skin firmness on the neck or hands. For most of the patients we see who are considering a collagen stimulator, Radiesse offers the best balance of visible results, efficiency and long-term collagen benefit.
Important for both
Neither Sculptra nor Radiesse can be dissolved the way hyaluronic acid filler can, so choosing an experienced doctor is essential. Neither is the right choice for areas like the lips, and both are best placed after a full facial assessment rather than used to chase individual lines.
Do you offer Sculptra at Dr Jane Clinic?
We currently use Radiesse as our collagen stimulator of choice. If you came to us asking about Sculptra, our doctors can explain whether Radiesse can achieve your goals, or whether a different approach, such as hyaluronic acid dermal fillers or a skin booster like Profhilo, would suit you better.
Collagen stimulators vs lifting treatments
If your main concern is sagging rather than volume loss, a lifting treatment such as HIFU or Ultherapy may be more appropriate, or a combination of both. Our guide to Radiesse vs HIFU vs Ultherapy explains how to tell the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Is Radiesse better than Sculptra?
Neither is better for everyone. Radiesse gives immediate structure plus collagen stimulation with fewer sessions, while Sculptra builds volume slowly over a series. The right choice depends on your face, goals and timeline.
How long does Radiesse last?
Results can last up to around 18 months, depending on the area treated, your age and your metabolism.
Is Radiesse safe?
Radiesse has been used for many years and is approved for facial and hand rejuvenation. As with any injectable, it should be performed by a trained doctor who understands facial anatomy.
