How Effective Is Laser for Skin Ageing? What Works on Asian Skin, and What to Use Instead
Laser treatments can be very effective for some signs of skin ageing, especially fine lines, rough texture, sun damage and uneven pigmentation. They are less effective for sagging skin, and on Asian skin the choice of laser and settings matters a great deal, because the wrong approach can leave darker patches behind.
At Dr Jane Clinic in Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya, our LCP-certified doctors use several lasers for ageing skin and choose between them based on your concern, skin type and how much downtime you can take. This guide explains what each one does well, what lasers cannot do, and what to use instead.
What lasers can and can't do for ageing skin
Good for: fine lines, crepey or rough texture, enlarged pores, sun spots, uneven tone, redness and overall skin quality.
Moderate for: deeper wrinkles, which usually need stronger resurfacing or a combination with other treatments.
Not the right tool for: sagging cheeks, jowls or a loose jawline. Lasers improve the skin's surface and quality, but they do not lift tissue.
Laser options for ageing skin at Dr Jane Clinic
Fractional CO2 laser: strongest results, real downtime
Fractional CO2 is an ablative resurfacing laser. It creates thousands of tiny, controlled columns of injury in the skin, leaving the skin in between untouched, which triggers strong collagen renewal. It is one of our most effective treatments for deeper wrinkles and textured, sun-damaged skin.
Downtime: typically 5 to 7 days of redness and peeling, depending on intensity. Read our CO2 laser recovery guide or the CO2 laser treatment page.
Discovery Pico laser: pigmentation and texture, minimal downtime
Pico laser delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses that break up pigment, and the same energy stimulates collagen. It suits ageing skin where sun spots, uneven tone and dullness are the main concern, with mild texture improvement.
Downtime: usually mild pinkness for a short time. See Pico laser and our Pico aftercare guide.
ADVATx laser: redness and skin quality
ADVATx is a yellow laser combining 589 nm and 1319 nm wavelengths. It targets redness, broken capillaries and rosacea, and stimulates collagen for healthier-looking skin. Learn more about our vascular laser treatment.
Why Asian skin needs a careful approach
Asian skin has more active pigment cells, so aggressive laser settings, poor preparation or sun exposure afterwards can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: dark patches that appear after the skin has been irritated. This is one of the main risks of laser treatment on Asian skin.
Our doctors reduce this risk by:
Assessing your skin type and any melasma before choosing a laser
Adjusting settings for Asian skin rather than using one standard setting for everyone
Preparing the skin beforehand where needed, and planning sessions at suitable intervals
Giving clear aftercare, including strict daily sun protection
If your main concern is sagging: what to use instead
For loose skin, jowls or a less defined jawline, treatments that work on the deeper layers are more suitable than lasers. These include HIFU, Ultherapy, Endolift and thread lifts. Our comparison of RF vs HIFU vs Endolift explains how to choose. Many patients combine a laser for skin quality with a lifting treatment for structure.
Quick guide: which treatment for which concern?
Deeper wrinkles and rough, sun-damaged texture: fractional CO2 laser
Sun spots and uneven tone: Pico laser
Redness and visible capillaries: ADVATx
Sagging cheeks, jowls or jawline: HIFU, Ultherapy, Endolift or thread lift, not a laser
How long do laser results last?
Collagen builds gradually, so results from resurfacing usually continue to improve over the following months. Lasers do not stop ageing, but daily sunscreen, a good skincare routine and occasional maintenance sessions help you keep the improvement for longer.
Frequently asked questions
How effective are laser treatments for skin ageing?
Lasers can make a clear difference to fine lines, texture, sun spots and uneven tone. Stronger lasers such as fractional CO2 give more noticeable results with more downtime, while gentler lasers need more sessions. Lasers do not lift sagging skin.
Is laser safe for Asian skin?
Yes, when the laser and settings are chosen for your skin type and you follow aftercare carefully. The main risk is temporary dark patches, which is why assessment by an experienced doctor matters.
Which laser is best for wrinkles?
For deeper wrinkles, fractional CO2 usually gives the strongest result. For fine lines with little downtime, a gentler option such as Pico laser is often preferred. Your doctor will recommend one after examining your skin.
