Pico Laser Aftercare and Downtime: What to Expect After Each Session
Pico laser is one of the treatments we're asked about most at Dr Jane Clinic in Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya, whether for freckles, sun spots, melasma, acne scars or a dull, uneven tone. Interestingly, most questions before a first session aren't about the laser itself. They're about what happens afterwards: Will I be red? Can I go to work tomorrow? When will I actually see a difference?
This guide answers those questions honestly, based on how our doctors use the Discovery Pico Laser at the clinic. Your own plan will depend on your skin and what we're treating, so think of this as a realistic overview rather than a promise.
The quick answer
Pigmentation: most people have little to no downtime and go back to work the next day.
Acne scars: expect mild redness for a day or two, occasionally a few days.
Results: improvement usually starts to show within one to three weeks.
Sessions: most concerns need a course of treatments, not a single visit.
What happens during a Pico laser session
A session usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area. The Pico laser delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses that break pigment into tiny particles, which your body then clears gradually. The same energy also stimulates collagen, which is why Pico can help with texture and acne scars as well as pigmentation.
Most patients describe the sensation as mild heat or tingling. We use cooling during treatment to keep you comfortable, and a soothing cream is applied once the session is finished.
Pico laser downtime, day by day
The same day
Your skin may look slightly pink and feel warm, a little like mild sunburn. For most people this settles within a few hours.
Days one to three
After pigmentation treatment, most patients carry on with their normal routine. Some notice that treated spots look slightly darker for a few days before they begin to fade. After acne scar treatment, mild redness and a little dryness for one to two days is common, and occasionally it lasts a few days.
Weeks one to three
This is when pigment gradually lightens and skin tone starts to look brighter and more even. Texture and scar changes are slower, because collagen remodelling takes time and builds over a course of sessions.
Pico laser aftercare: what to do and what to avoid
Good aftercare protects your results and lowers the chance of irritation. Your doctor will give you personalised instructions, but the basics usually look like this:
Wear sunscreen every day and reapply if you're outdoors. Malaysian sun is the most common reason pigmentation returns.
Keep your skin calm and moisturised with a gentle cleanser and a simple moisturiser.
Pause strong actives such as retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs for a few days, or for as long as your doctor advises.
Don't pick or scrub at darker spots or any light flaking. Let them fade on their own.
Avoid intense heat such as saunas, hot yoga and long spells in the sun for the first day or two.
Come back for your follow-up, so we can check how your skin has responded and adjust the next session.
When will I see results, and how many sessions will I need?
The honest answer is that it depends on what we're treating.
Freckles and sun spots often respond well, and some patients see a noticeable reduction after just one or two sessions.
Melasma is slower and needs a gentle, careful approach. Because it is influenced by hormones and sun exposure, it can return, so maintenance and strict sun protection matter. Read more about our approach to melasma treatment.
Acne scars need a course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with changes building gradually. For deeper scars, our doctors sometimes combine Pico with dermal fillers or skin booster treatment. See our full acne scar treatment options.
We would much rather set realistic expectations at your consultation than promise a one-session miracle.
Who should take extra care
Pico laser suits many Asian skin types, but some situations call for adjustments or a short wait:
Melasma-prone or very reactive skin, which usually needs more conservative settings.
A recent tan or heavy sun exposure, which may mean postponing treatment.
Active breakouts or irritation in the area to be treated, which should be calmed first.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding or medicines that make your skin sun-sensitive. Please mention these at your consultation.
Why a doctor-led assessment matters
Pigmentation isn't one condition. Melasma, freckles, sun spots and post-acne marks can look similar but behave very differently, and the wrong settings can make some types more stubborn. That's why every Pico treatment at Dr Jane Clinic starts with a doctor's assessment and a plan that fits your skin. Our pigmentation treatment page explains the options in more detail.
Treatments are planned by our LCP-certified aesthetic doctors, Dr Jane Frances and Dr Huey Ming. Dr Jane has worked with the Discovery Pico Laser since 2019 and has been a Discovery Pico Laser speaker in Malaysia for many years.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to work after Pico laser?
For pigmentation treatment, most people return to work the next day, and many the same day. After acne scar treatment, you may have mild redness for a day or two, so some patients prefer to book before a weekend.
Will pigmentation come back after Pico laser?
It can, especially melasma and pigmentation triggered by sun exposure. Daily sunscreen, sensible aftercare and occasional maintenance sessions help keep results for longer.
Is Pico laser painful?
Most patients feel mild heat or tingling rather than pain. Sessions are short, and we use cooling to keep you comfortable throughout.
