Stretch marks are extremely common after pregnancy, growth spurts, weight changes or muscle building. They're harmless, but many people feel self-conscious about them. So, can they actually be removed? The honest answer: they can be made much less visible, and the earlier you treat them, the better the result.

Why Stretch Marks Happen

Stretch marks (striae) form when skin stretches faster than it can adapt, tearing the collagen and elastin in the deeper layer. Hormones play a part too, which is why they often appear during pregnancy and puberty. Common areas are the tummy, thighs, hips, breasts and upper arms.

Red vs White Stretch Marks

  • Red or purple (striae rubra): newer marks that still have blood supply. They respond best to treatment.

  • White or silver (striae alba): older, faded marks. They're harder to treat but can still improve in texture and visibility.

What Works and What Doesn't

Creams and oils: they keep skin moisturised and may help new marks slightly, but they can't rebuild the torn collagen underneath.

Fractional laser: creates tiny channels in the skin to trigger new collagen, improving texture and blending the marks with surrounding skin. This is one of the most effective options. See our stretch marks laser treatment.

Vascular or pigment laser: helps reduce the redness of new stretch marks.

Microneedling: stimulates collagen with fine needles and is a good option for many skin types. Learn more about SkinPen microneedling.

Combination treatment: in practice, the best results often come from combining laser and microneedling over several sessions, based on the age and type of your stretch marks.

What Results Can You Expect?

Most people need 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Improvement builds gradually as new collagen forms over a few months. Expect stretch marks to become flatter, narrower and closer to your natural skin tone, rather than disappearing completely.

Can I Treat Stretch Marks During Pregnancy?

Laser treatment is not done during pregnancy. You can keep skin moisturised during pregnancy, then start treatment after delivery. Many mothers begin once they've finished breastfeeding, but a doctor can advise you on timing.

Stretch marks and skin laxity often come together after pregnancy or weight loss. If loose skin is also a concern, ask about skin tightening at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can stretch marks be removed completely?

Stretch marks usually can't be erased completely, but treatment can make them much less visible by improving their colour, width and texture. Many patients see a clear improvement after a course of treatment.

Do stretch mark creams work?

Creams may help a little with new, red stretch marks, especially when started early. They have limited effect on older, white stretch marks.

Are red or white stretch marks easier to treat?

Red or purple stretch marks are newer and usually respond faster to treatment. White stretch marks are older and need more sessions, but can still improve.

How many sessions do I need for stretch marks?

Most people need 3 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The exact number depends on how old, wide and deep the stretch marks are.
