Search for an aesthetic doctor in Malaysia and you will find clinics, beauty centres and social media accounts all offering Botox, fillers and lasers. These are medical procedures, so who performs them matters just as much as which treatment you choose. This guide explains what an aesthetic doctor is, what the LCP credential means, how to check a doctor and clinic yourself in a few minutes, and what to ask before you book.

What Is an Aesthetic Doctor?

An aesthetic doctor is a registered medical doctor with additional training in aesthetic medicine: non-surgical treatments that improve the look and health of your skin and face. These include anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters, laser treatments and energy-based skin tightening.

In Malaysia, doctors from different backgrounds can be credentialed to practise aesthetic medicine, including general practitioners, medical specialists such as dermatologists, and surgical specialists such as plastic surgeons. What they must all have is the right credential from the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Aesthetic doctor, dermatologist or plastic surgeon?

  • Aesthetic doctor: non-surgical treatments for ageing, sagging, skin quality, pigmentation, acne scars and facial contour.

  • Dermatologist: a specialist in diseases of the skin, hair and nails, and the right first stop for complex, severe or unclear skin conditions.

  • Plastic surgeon: surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery, nose surgery, facelifts and body surgery.

Many people see more than one of these over the years. A good doctor will tell you when your concern is better handled by someone else and refer you.

What Does LCP Mean?

LCP stands for Letter of Credentialing and Privileging. It is issued by the Medical Practice Division of the Ministry of Health to registered doctors who meet the requirements to practise aesthetic medicine. Without an LCP, a doctor cannot carry out aesthetic procedures.

Two details are worth knowing:

  • The LCP states which procedures that doctor is privileged to perform, so it is fair to ask whether the treatment you want is covered.

  • LCPs are time-limited and must be renewed, and credentialed doctors are listed on MOH's National Registry of Registered Medical Practitioners Practising Aesthetic Medical Practice.

At Dr Jane Clinic, both our doctors, Dr Jane Frances and Dr Huey Ming, are LCP-certified aesthetic doctors.

Who Can Give Botox, Fillers and Skin Boosters?

Injectables such as Botox, dermal fillers and skin boosters can only be given by, or under the direct supervision of, a licensed doctor. Beauticians and nurses acting independently cannot legally perform them. MOH has also listed certain procedures as illegal, including breast and buttock fillers.

Lasers and energy-based devices, such as Pico laser for pigmentation or HIFU for lifting, also need proper medical assessment. Skin type, pigmentation risk and existing conditions all change which settings and treatments are safe for you.

Questions to Ask at Your Consultation

  • Who will perform my treatment, and are they LCP-certified?

  • What is causing my concern, and is this the right treatment for it, or is there a better option?

  • Which product or device will you use, and is it registered?

  • What result is realistic for me, and how much downtime should I expect?

  • What are the risks, and what happens if I have a side effect?

  • Is there a follow-up review?

A good doctor will be happy to answer all of these and will not rush you into a decision.

Signs You Are in Good Hands

  • The doctor assesses your whole face and skin before recommending anything.

  • You hear honest limits, including when a treatment will not help or when it is better to wait.

  • The plan favours natural, gradual results rather than doing too much in one session.

  • Products are opened in front of you, and there is a clear aftercare and follow-up plan.

  • The clinic can manage complications and will refer you on when needed.

Reasons to pause

  • Injections offered outside a registered clinic, such as at home or in a beauty centre.

  • Nobody can tell you the product name or show you the packaging.

  • Pressure to decide on the spot, or no one explains the risks.

How We Work at Dr Jane Clinic

Every treatment at Dr Jane Clinic starts with a consultation with one of our doctors, and injectables are performed by our doctors personally, never by therapists. We look at what is actually causing your concern, whether that is volume loss, sagging, pigmentation or acne scars, then recommend a plan that suits your skin, goals and budget. Sometimes that means fewer treatments, not more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an aesthetic doctor the same as a dermatologist?

No. A dermatologist is a specialist in skin, hair and nail disease. An aesthetic doctor is a registered doctor credentialed to perform aesthetic procedures. Some dermatologists also hold an LCP, but the two roles are different.

How can I check if my doctor has an LCP?

Search the MOH registry of doctors practising aesthetic medicine, and ask the clinic directly. It is also reasonable to ask whether their LCP covers the procedure you want.

Can a beautician do Botox or fillers in Malaysia?

No. Botox, fillers and skin boosters must be given by, or under the direct supervision of, a licensed doctor in a registered clinic.
